After a game-changing finale of season 8, The Blacklist season 9 of the crime-drama thriller will see a two-year time jump. SPOILERS AHEAD!
The Blacklist is an American crime thriller television series that premiered on NBC on September 23, 2013. The show follows Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington (James Spader), a former U.S. Navy officer turned high-profile criminal who voluntarily surrenders to the FBI after eluding capture for decades. He tells the FBI that he has a list of the most dangerous criminals in the world which he has compiled over the years, and he is willing to inform on their operations in exchange for immunity from prosecution. However, he insists on working exclusively with rookie FBI profiler Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone).
Since 2013, there have been 8 seasons of the show. The show was renewed for The Blacklist Season 9 on January 26th, 2021, which is set to come out this October amid a lot of buzz and speculations.
Season 8 of The Blacklist ended on a rather bitter note back in June, with the tragic murder of series protagonist Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Keene. She was shot in the back by one of Neville’s henchmen while she was meeting ‘Red’, leading to her death.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR SEASON 9?
When the series returns for The Balcklist Season 9 premiere, there will be a two-year time leap. The story will pick up two years after Keene’s murder.

It will be very clear how big an impact Keen’s death had on the show’s characters. The FBI task force dedicated to taking down the world’s worst criminals will have disbanded, and many of them will now be living very different lives. With the mastermind Raymond Reddington in the wind, the old team finds themselves drawn together by a common goal- resuming their mission to take down “dangerous, vicious, and eccentric Blacklisters,” per a new season 9 logline.
It is expected to have 22 episodes.
A day after the finale, Blacklist creator Jon Bokenkamp also bid adieu to the show.
Lots of changes, lots of news, and hopefully lots of exciting things to look forward to this season!
WHICH CAST MEMBERS WILL BE RETURNING?
The members expected to return are James Spader (Red), Diego Klattenhoff (Donald Ressler), Harry Lenix (Harold Cooper), Hisham Tawfiq (Dembe Zuma), Laura Sohn (Alina Park), and Amir Arison (Aram Mojtabai).
Laila Robins will not return after ‘Red’ finished Katarina Rostova off.

The Internet is abuzz with fan theories as to what will happen in The Blacklist Season 9 since one of the main plot drivers – the dynamic between Red and Liz – won’t be there anymore.
Will Red be blamed for Liz’s death?
It is also possible that Red will go on a quest for revenge following his daughter’s death.
Some think he might take it upon himself to protect Liz’s daughter Agnes.
Ultimately, it’s nothing but a waiting game at this point!
