After Billions final episode aired on 29 October 2023, Brian Koppelman and David Levien confirmed there wouldn’t be season 8 but rather spinoffs. This came after the original Billions had been enormously received, ending with an overall rating of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Premiering on 17 January 2016 on Showtime, the drama series was created by Andrew Ross Sorkin, Brian Koppelman and David Levien. It follows the lifestyle of a hedge fund manager, Bobby Axelrod, who garners significant wealth in a world of high finance. Set in New York, Billions had seven seasons, forming the longest-running scripted original series on Showtime.
Billions Enormous Success
The original show ended with multiple accolades, both wins and nominations under several categories. In 2017, it was nominated by Satellite, Artios and Golden Nymph Awards and was followed by the Critics Choice Television Awards nominations in 2018. GLAAD Media Awards also selected the show for different categories in three consecutive years. In 2023, Billions crowned its award list with a win during the Satellite Awards under the Best Television Drama Series category.
Central to the show’s success are its themes like gambling and complex character relationships that drive the narrative forward. In one notable storyline, characters are seen to participate in strategic and intense poker matches. This trend, where content creators integrate such contemporary lifestyles into their plots to make them more engaging, has become popular.
As technology advances, sectors like iGaming evolve along with it, creating online casinos like Jackpot City PA, which are becoming increasingly popular because of their convenience of access. As such, upcoming spinoffs might include such advancements in their plots where characters engage in poker matches in online casinos without visiting physical locations.

As per Parade, Billions: Miami was labelled as the foremost spinoff of the four. It is set to take place in Miami within the private aviation industry. The plot revolves around a clientele who believes they are exempt from government, society and gravity rules while featuring Miami’s lifestyle, wealth and cryptocurrency. Koppleman and Levien, in an interview, illustrated that the plot was inspired by how the super-rich had started taking over Miami’s vibrant scene.
In the Millions show, characters play as rising power owners rather than established ones. A Deadline report showed that the plot follows a group of financial moguls in their thirties pushing hard to make it in life in Manhattan. The Trillions drama series is projected to be soapier than the other shows. It is a fictional series set around how titans of industry interact with each other. Koppleman and Levien also indicated the release of another spinoff, Billions: London, which is a London-based version of the original version.
The announcement of upcoming Billions’ spinoffs indicates how complex narratives and rich characters offer creators ample opportunities to keep their audiences entertained. This way, TV shows expand their universe, offering fans new insights and storylines to sink their teeth into. By adding popular lifestyles into their storylines, we expect future spinoffs to be even more engaging.
