A Humorist From the Start
McCall was born on June 11, 1964, in Palo Alto, California, where his father taught at Stanford University. He graduated from Stanford himself and became a humor columnist for the Peninsula Times Tribune, a local newspaper. He then moved to New York and joined the original writing staff of Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 1993, where he shared an office with Andy Richter and worked alongside other future comedy stars like Louis C.K., Robert Smigel, and Bob Odenkirk.
A Sitcom Staple
After a year on Late Night, McCall moved to Los Angeles and joined the NBC sitcom Just Shoot Me!, created by Steve Levitan. He stayed on the show for five seasons, rising to executive producer and writing 11 episodes. He also co-created two series, My Big Fat Greek Life with Nia Vardalos and Twenty Good Years with John Lithgow and Jeffrey Tambor. He served as executive producer on Tim Allen’s Last Man Standing and co-executive producer on Netflix’s Fuller House, a sequel to the classic sitcom Full House.
