Early Life and Education
Charles John Hallahan was born on July 29, 1943, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Irish Catholic parents and had a brother, Kenneth, who became a priest. He grew up in Harrisburg and then Green Ridge, Delaware County. He attended St. James High School in Chester, where he graduated in 1961.
He served three years in the US Navy in the early 1960s, including time as a Navy hospital corpsman. He then pursued his education at Rutgers University-Camden, where he earned a BA degree in 1968. He continued his studies at Temple University in his hometown, where he obtained an MFA degree in 1971.

Hallahan began his acting career on stage, joining the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco in 1972. He performed in many plays there, such as One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Equus, and The Threepenny Opera. In 1977, he moved to Los Angeles and became a founding member of The Matrix Theatre Company. He appeared in plays like Endgame and The Seagull, as well as Robert Schenkkan’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Kentucky Cycle.
Hallahan also made his mark on screen, starting with small roles in The Rockford Files, Happy Days and Hawaii Five-O (all 1977). According to Wikipedia, one of his final film roles–and arguably among his best remembered–was his portrayal of volcanologist Dr. Paul Dreyfus in the 1997 disaster-thriller film Dante’s Peak, which also starred Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton.
On television, Hallahan was a regular cast member of two popular series: Grace Under Fire and The Paper Chase. He also played recurring roles as Chet Wilke in Lou Grant (1979–1982) and Captain Charlie Devane in Hunter (1986–1991). He guest-starred in many other shows, such as MAS*H, Hill Street Blues, The Equalizer, Murder She Wrote, ER, and NYPD Blue. According to IMDb he was cast as Liam Bilby for the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Honor Among Thieves”, but was replaced after his death.
