Rapper YNW Melly, who is facing double murder charges, has given his fans an update on his prison release date. The 22-year-old artist, whose real name is Jamell Maurice Demons, posted a photo of himself in the Broward County Jail in Florida and wrote: “It’s bout that time y’all can uncross y’all fingers i’ll be home this year” .
YNW Melly was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in February 2019, after he allegedly shot and killed two of his friends, Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams and Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr., in October 2018. He has pleaded not guilty and his trial began on April 4th, 2022.
The rapper’s mother, Jamie King, and brother, YNW Bslime, have also expressed their confidence that he will be home soon. In March, they claimed that he will be released in May, depending on how fast the jury is picked . However, as of May 21st, 2023, there has been no official confirmation of his release date.
Prosecutors are reportedly seeking the death penalty for YNW Melly, as they believe he killed his friends for financial gain and staged the scene to look like a drive-by shooting. The rapper’s lawyers have argued that he acted in self-defense and that there is no physical evidence linking him to the crime .
While in jail, YNW Melly has continued to release music and collaborate with other artists. His latest album, Just A Matter Of Slime, dropped on August 13th, 2022, and featured guest appearances from Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Baby, Lil Durk, Young Thug, Lil Tjay, Kevin Gates, Future, and Tee Grizzley. The album received positive reviews from critics and fans alike.
YNW Melly is best known for his songs “Murder on My Mind”, “Mixed Personalities”, and “Suicidal”, which have amassed millions of streams on various platforms. He has also been nominated for several awards, including the BET Hip Hop Awards and the Billboard Music Awards.
