A Trailblazer in the Wrestling Industry
Graham was born Eldridge Wayne Coleman Jr. in Phoenix, Arizona, on June 7, 1943. He was a bodybuilder who trained with Arnold Schwarzenegger and competed in the Mr. America contest. He also played football for the Canadian Football League before becoming a professional wrestler in 1970.
Graham was known for his flashy fashion style, over-the-top interviews and bodybuilder physique that inspired a generation of wrestlers such as Hulk Hogan, Jesse Ventura and Scott Steiner. He was a three-time world champion in major promotions, most notably holding the WWWF Heavyweight Championship from 1977 to 1978.
Graham was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004 by Triple H, who praised him as “the man who changed this business forever”. Graham also worked as a color commentator and made occasional appearances on WWE programming.
A Long Battle with Health Problems
Graham’s health problems began in 2002 when he needed a liver transplant due to cirrhosis, likely caused by his longtime steroid use. He also suffered from hepatitis C, diabetes, pneumonia and heart failure. He sold his Hall of Fame ring on eBay to help cover his medical expenses.
In January 2023, Graham was hospitalized with an ear and skull infection that required surgery. His condition worsened over the following months, and he lost 80 pounds. His wife Valerie Coleman asked for prayers on Facebook when the doctors wanted to remove him from life support.
On May 17, 2023, Graham passed away at the age of 79. His cause of death was not officially disclosed, but it is believed that he died due to complications from his infection.
A Legacy That Lives On

WWE Chairman Vince McMahon called him “one of the most captivating and charismatic figures in sports entertainment history”. Former WWE Champion John Cena said he was “grateful for his influence and impact”.
