Mike Quinn Cause of Death: How the Bodybuilding Icon Lost His Battle with Illness

Who Was Mike Quinn?

Mike Quinn, also known as “Mighty” Mike Quinn, was a professional bodybuilder who competed in the 1980s and 1990s. He was known for his charismatic personality, his outspokenness on controversial topics such as steroid use, and his impressive physique that earned him several magazine covers and international fame.

Quinn started his bodybuilding career at the age of 18, after developing an interest in fitness and powerlifting as a teenager. He won the overall Teen title at the 1981 AAU Mr. America, and earned his IFBB pro card by winning the 1987 NPC USA overall championship.

He made his pro debut that same year, placing fourth in the Detroit Pro Championships. He competed in 10 shows in 1988, placing in the top seven in all of them, and finishing sixth in his first Mr. Olympia contest. He returned to the Olympia stage in 1989 and 1990, placing seventh and 11th respectively.

Why Did He Leave the IFBB?

In 1991, Quinn was one of the bodybuilders who left the IFBB for Vince McMahon’s World Bodybuilding Federation (WBF), a rival organization that promised more exposure and money for the athletes. However, the WBF only lasted for one year, and Quinn only competed in one show under its banner, placing 12th at the WBF Grand Prix.

Quinn applied to return to the IFBB, and made his comeback in 1993, placing outside the top 15 at the Night of Champions. He improved to fifth place at the 1994 Night of Champions, and appeared in his final Mr. Olympia that year, finishing outside the top 15 as well.

He retired from competitive bodybuilding in 1999, after two more shows where he ranked outside the top 15. He stayed involved with the sport from the outside, posting bodybuilding advice and training videos on his Instagram account.

What Was Mike Quinn’s Cause of Death?

Quinn passed away at the age of 61, after suffering from a long illness. His sister, Kellie, announced his death on Facebook on May 30, 2023. She did not reveal the exact cause of death or the nature of his illness, but she said that he had received his angel wings.

Quinn’s fans and fellow bodybuilders expressed their condolences and tributes on social media, remembering him as a legend and an inspiration. He is survived by his mother, sister, and other family members.
