Who was James Donovan?
James Britt Donovan was an American lawyer, naval officer, and diplomat who played a key role in some of the most significant events of the 20th century. He is best known for negotiating the exchange of captured spies during the Cold War, and for securing the release of thousands of prisoners after the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. He also served as an assistant to Justice Robert H. Jackson at the Nuremberg trials, where he presented visual evidence of Nazi atrocities. He was portrayed by Tom Hanks in the 2015 movie Bridge of Spies, directed by Steven Spielberg.

In 1957, he defended the Soviet spy Rudolf Abel in a high-profile case that was widely criticized by the public and the media. He appealed Abel’s conviction and death sentence to the Supreme Court, which upheld the verdict but commuted the sentence to 30 years in prison. Donovan argued that keeping Abel alive could be useful for future negotiations with the Soviet Union.
In 1962, he proved his point when he successfully negotiated the exchange of Abel for Francis Gary Powers, an American pilot who was shot down over the Soviet Union while flying a U-2 spy plane. He also secured the release of Frederic Pryor, an American student who was detained in East Germany. The swap took place on the Glienicke Bridge in Berlin, which became known as the Bridge of Spies.
In 1962, he was appointed by President John F. Kennedy to negotiate the release of the prisoners captured by Cuba after the failed Bay of Pigs invasion. He traveled to Havana and met with Fidel Castro, and managed to secure the freedom of 9,703 prisoners in exchange for $53 million worth of food and medicine. He also helped reunite many Cuban families who were separated by the political turmoil.
In 1968, he became the president of Pratt Institute, a prestigious art and design school in New York. He died of a heart attack on January 19, 1970, at the age of 53, while being treated for influenza at a hospital in Brooklyn.
