The Hanover community is mourning the sudden and unexpected death of Efe Obrimah, a recent graduate of Atlee High School and a star athlete. Obrimah was found lying on the ground near the press box at the Atlee High School football field on Saturday afternoon, August 13, 2022. The cause of his death is still under investigation, but officials do not suspect foul play according to WTVR.
A Scholar and a Champion
Obrimah was an exceptional student-athlete who excelled both in the classroom and on the track. He captured the VHSL State Championship in the Boys 4×200 event in both 2021 and 2022 and received national, state and regional recognition for his achievements. He was also a friend to all and a role model for many.
His friends and teammates described him as an inspiration, a hard worker, a humble person and a fun-loving guy. They said he never complained about anything and always pushed himself to the best of his abilities. He was also smart, funny, caring and kind, making everyone around him smile.
One of his friends, Greg Durgin, said that Obrimah was “one of the hardest-working people” he knew. He also said that Obrimah was “beyond humble despite all of his accomplishments” according to GoFundMe.
A Legacy That Lives On
While Obrimah’s life was cut short, his friends and family said that his legacy and impact will never fade away. They said that he will always be remembered and celebrated for how he valued his friendships, his passions and his dreams.
The principal of Atlee High School, John Wheeler, shared a message with the school community on Wednesday night, expressing his condolences to the Obrimah family and praising Obrimah for being “the epitome of a Raider”. He also said that Obrimah “will always be a part of Raider Nation” according to WTVR.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up by Durgin and other friends of Obrimah to support his family in their time of need. The campaign has raised over $21,000 as of August 18, 2022. The funds will go directly to Obrimah’s uncle, Oyekale Samuel Oni, who will use them for any expenses the family may need.
Obrimah’s funeral service was held on Saturday, August 21, 2022 at Mechanicsville Church of Christ. His obituary can be found on Bennett Funeral Home’s website.
