The importance of data and analytics in football has increased in recent years. Many professional clubs are working to expand their analytics departments. So, how can you stay ahead of the curve? In this blog, we have covered the important tips that will help you get started on your football analytics journey! Football data and analytics also entail the chance to get 꽁머니!
Always Watch Football Analytically
If you aspire to enter this field, it is likely that you already watch a great amount of football. However, often during games, one gets absorbed in the excitement, atmosphere, and storylines rather than analyzing various movements and tactical plays — and that is perfectly okay! It is essential to remember that football is meant to be enjoyed. However, if you are interested in getting into sports analysis professionally, it is important to adopt an analytical perspective the next time you watch a football match.
One way to analyze is that instead of just following the ball, pay attention to the crucial movements, rotations, and shifts in shape within both teams. Choose a team to analyze and concentrate solely on them. Analyzing the team you support can be a good starting point since your familiarity with the players will prevent you from spending time identifying and getting acquainted with them. It is also important to consider how teams initiate their moves from the back. Does the goalkeeper consistently make short passes? Do they exhibit patience in moving the ball forward, or do they opt for a more direct approach? Once you keep a look out for these factors, your analytical skills will definitely improve.
Engage in Extensive Reading
For those stepping into the world of sports analytics, losing oneself in the literature on the subject proves beneficial. There are a number of books, articles, and publications dedicated to exploring the role of data and analytics in football. As the sport evolves, this reservoir of knowledge continues to expand. Staying ahead of the game will require in-depth reading which you should be prepared for.
Get Guidance From Individuals in Desired Positions
If you aim to improve your understanding of the game and determine the best path into football data and analytics, invest time in connecting with individuals currently working in roles that interest you. They could be performance analysts at clubs, recruitment specialists, or freelance video analysts. What is crucial is finding someone in a role that excites you and engaging in conversations with them. Learn about their career journey, inquire about the tools they use, and ask for software recommendations.
Begin Coding
Learning to code is important. While the prospect may seem daunting, acquiring coding skills offers great advantages in football data analysis; indeed, it is increasingly considered essential. Fortunately, there are many online resources available!
Two primary coding languages associated with sports analytics are R and Python. Although coding may appear intimidating at first, many analytics enthusiasts claim that it is not as challenging as they initially presumed. To ease into coding, experiment with tables, graphs, and data presentations using Excel; this serves as a foundation for learning more advanced coding techniques.
Keep this in mind and you are sure to excel in your football data and analytics journey!
