Zoro’s Origin and Childhood
Zoro was born in the East Blue, a sea that is considered to be the weakest and most peaceful of the four seas in the world of One Piece. He grew up in Shimotsuki Village, a small town that was founded by a group of people who left Wano Country 55 years ago. Among them was Shimotsuki Kozaburo, a renowned swordsmith who crafted two of Zoro’s swords: Wado Ichimonji and Enma.
Zoro trained at the local dojo run by Koushirou, Kozaburo’s son, and developed his own swordsmanship style called Santoryu, which involves wielding three swords at once. He had a friendly rivalry with Kuina, Koushirou’s daughter and the strongest disciple of the dojo. They both shared the same dream of becoming the world’s greatest swordsman, but Kuina was frustrated by the fact that she was a girl and would eventually lose to Zoro because of her physical limitations.
One day, they made a promise that one of them would achieve their dream and inherit the Wado Ichimonji, Kuina’s family heirloom. However, the next day, Kuina died in an accident, leaving Zoro devastated and determined to fulfill their promise. He asked Koushirou for Kuina’s sword and left the village to seek stronger opponents.
Zoro’s Connection to Ryuma and Ushimaru
Zoro’s journey as a swordsman led him to encounter many formidable foes, such as Dracule Mihawk, the current holder of the title of the world’s greatest swordsman, and Kuma, one of the former members of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. He also visited many different places, such as Thriller Bark, where he fought against a zombie version of Ryuma, a legendary samurai from Wano Country who was known as the “King of Hell” and the “Sword God”.
Ryuma was revered by the people of Wano for his heroic deeds, such as slaying a dragon that threatened the country. He was also the original owner of Shusui, one of the 21 Great Grade swords in the world and one of Zoro’s swords. After defeating Ryuma’s corpse, which was reanimated by Gekko Moriah’s Devil Fruit power, Zoro earned his respect and inherited his sword.
However, Zoro’s connection to Ryuma goes deeper than that. According to Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, Zoro is actually a descendant of Ryuma through his maternal line. This means that Zoro belongs to the Shimotsuki Family, one of the most influential families in Wano Country. The Shimotsuki Family ruled over two regions in Wano: Ringo and Hakumai. Ryuma was the founder of the family, while Ushimaru was the last daimyo (feudal lord) of Ringo before he was killed by Kaido, one of the Four Emperors of the Sea.
Zoro bears a striking resemblance to both Ryuma and Ushimaru, which suggests that he inherited their genes and traits. He also shares their passion for swordsmanship and their sense of honor and justice. Furthermore, Zoro has a close bond with Hiyori, Ushimaru’s niece and the daughter of Kozuki Oden, another legendary samurai from Wano who was executed by Kaido and Orochi.
Zoro’s Future as a Swordsman
Zoro’s heritage as a Shimotsuki has not been revealed to him or his crewmates yet, but it might play a significant role in his future development as a swordsman. Currently, Zoro is in Wano Country with Luffy and their allies, participating in the raid on Onigashima, where Kaido and Orochi are holding a festival. Zoro’s main goal is to defeat Kaido and avenge Oden and Ushimaru, as well as to return Shusui to its rightful place in Wano.
However, he might also face another challenge: Mihawk. Mihawk is Zoro’s ultimate rival and mentor, who trained him for two years during the timeskip. Mihawk is also being hunted by the World Government after they revoked his status as a Warlord. It is possible that Mihawk will come to Wano to join the battle, or that Zoro will meet him again after the arc is over. Either way, Zoro will have to prove himself worthy of his dream and his promise to Kuina by surpassing Mihawk and becoming the world’s greatest swordsman.
Zoro’s journey as a swordsman is not over yet. He still has many obstacles and enemies to overcome, as well as many secrets and mysteries to uncover. Who is Zoro related to? The answer might surprise him and his fans, but it will also inspire him and his friends. Zoro is a Shimotsuki, a descendant of Ryuma, and a member of the Straw Hat Pirates.
