Early Life and Career
Todd Lynn, also known as Teddy Wilson, was born on March 19, 1964 in Harlem, New York City. He studied music at Florida A&M University before switching to drama. He joined the Negro Ensemble Company and the Arena Stage Repertory in New York, where he honed his acting skills. He made his film debut in Cotton Comes to Harlem in 1970, and moved to Los Angeles the following year to pursue more opportunities in television and film.
Success and Fame in Sitcoms and Films
Wilson became a familiar face on television, appearing in several sitcoms produced by Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin, such as All in the Family, Sanford and Son, The Jeffersons, and What’s Happening!!. He also starred in his own series, Roll Out, in 1973, and That’s My Mama, from 1974 to 1975. He gained popularity for his recurring role as Sweet Daddy Williams, a street hustler and friend of the Evans family, on Good Times, from 1976 to 1979. He also played Phil Wheeler, the owner of the Sanford Arms, on the short-lived spin-off of Sanford and Son, Sanford Arms, in 1977. Wilson also appeared in several films, such as The Hunter, The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh, and Stir Crazy.
Personal Life and Death
Wilson was married twice, and had three children. He was a devout Christian, and often participated in charity events and church activities. He was also a fan of jazz music, and played the saxophone. Wilson struggled with numerous health problems throughout his life. He had a disfigured left arm and suffered from pancreatic cancer. He also began to go blind due to diabetes, and in the year prior to his death he battled heart and kidney failure. On January 27, 2012, Wilson suffered two strokes and a heart attack, and died in Mississippi. His death was announced by his cousin, Jane Van Zant, on social media. He was cremated, and his ashes were given to his family. He was survived by his son, Ronnie Van Zant Jr., his daughter, Brittany Van Zant, and his grandchildren. He was also mourned by his extended family, friends, and fans. He was remembered as a kind, generous, and talented person, who brought joy and laughter to millions of people. He was a true legend of comedy and entertainment.
