With The Last Duel, the director of Gladiator, Ridley Scott comes back to the medieval historic genre. A powerful truth-life drama that also brings together the artists Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in their acting and writing skills.
The Last Duel: Introduction
This film is an adaptation of Eric Jager’s 2004 book The Last Duel: A True Story of Combat in Medieval France. In 2015 a movie adaptation was originally proposed of Jager’s novel with the director Francis Lawrence and Shaun Grant as the scriptwriter. This initiative finally disappeared, though. In July 2019, the current adaption received the ok. A BBC drama-documentary of the same name was also founded on this novel.
The true film’s storyline is a complicated intrigue and politics, in the center of which is a young woman’s life. The story begins when Marguerite de Carrouges alleges that Jacques Le Gris has raped her. The argument is sadly rejected and Marguerite is convicted of lying on the grounds of lack of testimony or proof. And at that time the offense was to be burnt to death for making a false accusation. Her husband Jean de Carrouges brought the issue to the King and asked for the right to settle the issue by fighting. The film ‘The Last Duel’ by 20th Century Studios, is an exciting account of treachery and revenge against France’s cruelty of the 14th century.
The Last Duel: Cast
The film has Matt Damon, Jodie Comer, Adam Driver, and Ben Affleck as an ensemble cast. Damon and Affleck are also co-writers of the screenplay alongside Nicole Holofcener. Is the movie based on real occurrences?
Yeah, the last duel is based on actual occurrences. All of the actors engaged were actual persons; both historians and legal academics wrote about the given historical fight between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris. Although Jean de Carrouges and Jacque Le Gris Marguerite de Carrouges had an ancient legacy of evil blood in real life, the rape of Marguerite de Carrouges was a triggering event for the dual.
It was said by historians that the Norman Knight was Carrouges who had had several quarrels with his Lord, Pierre d’Alençon. Le Gris was a wealthy man and the favored count, making him a Carrouges enemy. Both men finally buried the hatchet and became friends, although there was residual bitterness between them. The rape just put these disputes back to the surface and incited the men to strive to ruin one other.
