Nick Menza Cause of Death: Natural Causes, Coroner Says

Former Megadeth drummer Nick Menza, who died on stage in 2016, succumbed to natural causes, according to the official report from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The report, obtained by Loudersound, states that Menza had hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, which are common risk factors for heart attack and stroke.

A Legendary Drummer

Menza was one of the most influential drummers in the thrash metal scene, having played on four of Megadeth’s classic albums: Rust in Peace, Countdown to Extinction, Youthanasia, and Cryptic Writings. He joined the band in 1989 after serving as a drum tech for Chuck Behler, who was then Megadeth’s drummer. He was invited by Dave Mustaine, the band’s leader and founder, who was impressed by his skills and professionalism.

Menza’s drumming style was characterized by speed, power, precision, and creativity. He could play complex rhythms and patterns with ease, and also add subtle nuances and accents to enhance the songs. He was also known for his innovative drum kit, which featured a double-bass drum set with tom-toms mounted on a lower chrome rack and cymbal crashes mounted on a higher rack.

Menza also collaborated with other musicians outside of Megadeth, such as John Fogerty, Marty Friedman, and OHM. He released his own solo album, Life After Deth, in 2002.

A Tragic End

Menza’s death shocked the metal community and his fans around the world. He was performing with his band OHM at the Baked Potato in Los Angeles on May 21, 2016, when he collapsed during the third song of the set. Eyewitnesses said he had suffered a severe heart attack and was unresponsive. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. He was 51 years old.

Menza’s former bandmates and friends expressed their grief and condolences on social media. Mustaine tweeted: “TELL ME THIS ISN’T TRUE! I woke at 4 AM to hear Nick Menza passed away on 5/21 playing his drums w/Ohm at the Baked Potato. #nickmenzarip”. Friedman wrote on Facebook: “We all know the great and unique drummer that Nick Menza was, but he was also a trustworthy friend, a hilarious bandmate, as well as a very loving dad.”

Menza’s biographer and friend J Marshall Craig said he had been working on a comic book version of his biography, MenzaLife, which was slated for release in June 2016. He said Menza had been “absolutely glowing” when he saw him recently.

Menza’s legacy lives on in his music and his fans. He is widely regarded as one of the best drummers in metal history and an inspiration for many aspiring musicians. He is survived by his two sons, Donte and Nicholas.
