Townes Van Zandt and Ronnie Van Zant were two of the most influential and acclaimed songwriters of their generation. Both of them left a lasting legacy in the genres of country, folk, blues, and southern rock. But were they related by blood or by name? The answer is not as simple as it may seem.
The Van Zandt Family Tree
Townes Van Zandt was born on March 7, 1944, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was a descendant of Isaac Van Zandt, a prominent leader of the Republic of Texas in the 19th century, and Khleber Miller Van Zandt, a Confederate army major and one of the founders of Fort Worth Townes had two siblings, Bill and Donna, and his parents were Harris Williams Van Zandt and Dorothy Townes
Ronnie Van Zant was born on January 15, 1948, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was the son of Lacy Austin Van Zant and Marion Virginia Hicks Ronnie had five siblings, three sisters and two brothers: Donnie and Johnny. Donnie Van Zant was the founder and vocalist of the rock band .38 Special, and Johnny Van Zant became the lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd after Ronnie’s death
Ronnie also had a cousin named Jimmie Van Zant, who was also a musician
The Van Zandt Musical Legacy
Townes and Ronnie never met in person, but they had a mutual admiration for each other’s music. Townes was a fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd and wore a T-shirt of their album Street Survivors on the cover of his album Flyin’ Shoes Ronnie was also fond of Townes’ songs and covered his “Pancho and Lefty” with his band
Both Townes and Ronnie died tragically at a young age. Townes passed away on January 1, 1997, from cardiac arrhythmia caused by years of substance abuse. He was 52 years old Ronnie died on October 20, 1977, in a plane crash that also killed six other people, including two members of Lynyrd Skynyrd: Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines. He was 29 years old
Their music lives on through their recordings, their fans, and their families. Townes’ son J.T. Van Zandt is also a singer-songwriter who has performed his father’s songs and released his own albums Ronnie’s brother Johnny has been the lead vocalist of Lynyrd Skynyrd since 1987 and has kept the band’s legacy alive Ronnie’s daughter Tammy Van Zant is also a singer who has recorded some of her father’s songs
Townes Van Zandt and Ronnie Van Zant may not have been related by blood or by name, but they were certainly related by spirit and by song. They both left an indelible mark on the history of American music and inspired generations of artists and listeners.
