The Targaryen family tree is notoriously complex and confusing, with many generations of incestuous marriages and dragon-riding ancestors. One of the most intriguing and controversial figures in the Targaryen history is Daemon Targaryen, who will be portrayed by Matt Smith in the upcoming HBO series House of the Dragon. But how is Daemon related to Daenerys, the Mother of Dragons and the Breaker of Chains?
Daemon Targaryen: The Rogue Prince
Daemon Targaryen was a younger son of Prince Baelon Targaryen and a brother of King Viserys I Targaryen. He was a renowned warrior, a dragonrider, and a master of intrigue. He was also ambitious, impetuous, and moody, as charming as he was hot-tempered. He had three wives and several lovers, and fathered many children, some of whom were illegitimate.
Daemon’s first wife was Lady Rhea Royce, whom he married for political reasons. He soon grew bored of her and took a Pentoshi courtesan named Mysaria as his mistress. He also became the Commander of the City Watch of King’s Landing, earning the respect and loyalty of the gold cloaks.
Daemon’s second wife was Lady Laena Velaryon, a dragonrider and a cousin of his brother Viserys. They had twin daughters, Baela and Rhaena, who also became dragonriders. Laena died giving birth to a stillborn son, leaving Daemon heartbroken.
Daemon’s third wife was Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, his niece and the heir to the Iron Throne. They married in secret after Rhaenyra’s first husband, Ser Laenor Velaryon, was murdered. They had three sons: Aegon III, Viserys II, and Visenya (who died in infancy).
Daemon supported Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne when Viserys I died and his second wife, Queen Alicent Hightower, crowned her son Aegon II instead. This sparked a civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, which pitted Targaryen against Targaryen and dragon against dragon.
Daemon fought valiantly for his wife’s cause, conquering the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea and declaring himself king of those lands. He also killed his rival Aemond Targaryen in a spectacular aerial duel over the Gods Eye lake, but at the cost of his own life and that of his dragon Caraxes.
Daenerys Targaryen: The Last Dragon
Daenerys Targaryen was the youngest child of King Aerys II Targaryen, also known as the Mad King, who was overthrown and killed by Robert Baratheon during Robert’s Rebellion. Daenerys was born on Dragonstone island during a storm that destroyed most of the Targaryen fleet. Her mother Rhaella died giving birth to her.
Daenerys grew up in exile with her older brother Viserys, who claimed to be the rightful king of Westeros. They wandered from one city to another in Essos, living off the charity or pity of others. Viserys eventually sold Daenerys to Khal Drogo, a powerful warlord of the Dothraki nomads, in exchange for an army to reclaim his throne.
Daenerys became Khaleesi (queen) of Drogo’s khalasar (tribe) and learned to love him. She also received three dragon eggs as a wedding gift from Illyrio Mopatis, a wealthy merchant who had sheltered her and Viserys. When Drogo died from an infected wound, Daenerys burned his body on a funeral pyre and placed the eggs on it. She then walked into the flames herself, emerging unburnt with three baby dragons hatched from the eggs.
Daenerys became known as the Mother of Dragons and began to gather followers who believed in her destiny to rule Westeros. She freed slaves from various cities in Essos, earning titles such as Breaker of Chains and Mhysa (mother). She also faced enemies who wanted to stop her or use her for their own purposes.
Daenerys eventually sailed to Westeros with her dragons and her allies, including Tyrion Lannister, Jon Snow, and Grey Worm. She fought against Cersei Lannister, who had usurped the Iron Throne after Robert’s death. She also faced the threat of the Night King and his army of undead.
Daenerys won many battles but also suffered many losses. She became increasingly paranoid and ruthless, believing that she had to use fire and blood to achieve her goals. She burned King’s Landing with her dragon Drogon, killing thousands of innocent people. She was then killed by Jon Snow, who loved her but could not accept her actions.
Is Daenerys Related to Daemon? The Answer
Daenerys and Daemon are related, but very distantly. They share a common ancestor in King Viserys I Targaryen, who was Daemon’s brother and Daenerys’s great-great-great-great-grandfather. This makes Daemon a distant uncle of Daenerys, six times removed.
The exact degree of kinship between Daenerys and Daemon can be calculated as follows:
- Daenerys is the daughter of Aerys II, who is the son of Jaehaerys II, who is the son of Aegon V, who is the son of Maekar I, who is the son of Daeron II, who is the son of Aegon IV, who is the son of Viserys II, who is the son of Rhaenyra and Daemon.
- Daemon is the son of Baelon, who is the son of Jaehaerys I, who is the father of Viserys I.
- Therefore, Daenerys and Daemon are both descendants of Viserys I, but through different branches of the family tree.
- The closest common ancestor between Daenerys and Daemon is Rhaenyra and Daemon’s son Viserys II, who is Daenerys’s great-great-great-grandfather and Daemon’s grandson.
- This means that Daenerys and Daemon are separated by six generations: Daenerys -> Aerys II -> Jaehaerys II -> Aegon V -> Maekar I -> Daeron II -> Aegon IV -> Viserys II <- Rhaenyra and Daemon.
- According to the rules of consanguinity, this makes Daenerys and Daemon sixth-degree relatives, or sixth cousins once removed (since Daemon is one generation older than Daenerys).
To put this in perspective, Daenerys and Jon Snow are much more closely related than Daenerys and Daemon. Jon Snow is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen, who is the son of Aerys II, who is the father of Daenerys. This makes Jon Snow and Daenerys nephew and aunt, or first-degree relatives.
Daemon Targaryen and Daenerys Targaryen are both members of the Targaryen dynasty that ruled Westeros for centuries. They both had dragons, ambitions, and enemies. They both faced wars, betrayals, and tragedies. They both left a lasting mark on the history of their world.
But they are not very closely related. They are distant relatives who never met or knew each other. They lived in different times and places. They had different personalities and goals.
Is Daenerys related to Daemon? Yes, but not by much.
