After almost more than a year since the release of First Man, Damien Chazelle has finally announced the title of his follow-up film.
According to reports has acquired Babylon 2022, is written and directed by Chazelle and would be placed in late 1920s Hollywood as the film and television industry shifts from silent movies to talkies, and would follow the rise and fall of both completely fictitious and historical personalities. With the release of Jazz Singer, this period of Hollywood actually started. It has been a setting stage for many other films like Singin’ in the Rain and The Artist, but the possibility of just what Chazelle could do to a drama set in this historic era, and with dozens of stories to choose from, is exciting.
As per THR, Chazelle has been pitching Babylon 2022 to studios since June 2019. When First Man failed at the theatres despite critical praise, such a strong historical drama was seen as a dangerous gamble, prompting Chazelle to revise the screenplay and cut the expense. As part of the news, THR revealed that Paramount was scheduling the picture a restricted premiere on December 25, 2021, followed by a theatrical release on January 7, 2022; a tried and tested timescale for a possible Oscar film, that Babylon undoubtedly appears to be on.

Apart from revealing Babylon 2022 and its launch date, THR revealed the very first cast information for the picture, which involved a pair of major hitters – Brad Pitt and Emma Stone were in discussions to play the movie’s two stars.
Emma Stone, obviously, has a long tradition with Chazelle, having previously collaborated on La La Land, for which Stone won an Academy Award for Best Actress. Stone was cast in the role of Clara Bow, who is a real-life Hollywood actress who was an early sex emblem and box-office draw. She was in the movie Wings, which was also the first to receive the Academy Award for Best Picture.
However, Brad Pitt plays a fictitious character, a silent cinema star who struggles to adjust to the arrival of audio. According to THR, Pitt’s part is inspired by real figure John Gilbert, who is most remembered for his appearances in King Vidor’s The Big Parade. Pitt won his 1st acting Oscar for playing a fictitious character in ancient Hollywood in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood; perhaps he can hit gold again. Aside from that, Pitt is sticking to his promise to take fewer acting jobs. He is presently only scheduled to appear in 2 movies: Babylon and Bullet Train.
Sadly, Babylon 2022 would not have been a La La Land reuniting for Emma Stone and Damien Chazelle, as THR reported in December 2020 that Stone was leaving out over an unspecified cause. Her prospective successor, on the other hand, is none other than Margot Robbie. While this choice eliminates the Stone-Chazelle reuniting, Robbie and Pitt do share a link as co-stars in Quentin Tarantino’s movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
No additional formal cast information for Babylon has now been released, however as per IMDb, 2 other actors are reported to be linked to the project: Tobey Maguire, who is supposed to portray film producer Irving Thalberg, and Li Jun Li, who might portray Anna May Wong, the very first Chinese-American movie actor.

Babylon 2022 release date was moved back by a year by Paramount, among many other changes to the plan.
