Although this news was confirmed in 2017 fans are still shocked by the departures of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger from the film franchise called The Expendables. The franchise is a series of action films where Stallone played the protagonist of a man named Barry Ross. Apart from this, Stallone also co-wrote the first 3 films of the action franchise.
Stallone decided to exit the franchise in March 2017 after sources confirmed that he and the Nu Image/Millennium chief Avi Lerner could not find common ground on several aspects related to the new film. For example, they had disagreements regarding the script, a new director for the film, and several elements of quality of the film. He did, however, return to the franchise in 2018. Sources confirm that the process of filming has been slow-moving since and has incurred losses because there have been several starts and stops.
Schwarzenegger mentioned to EW in an interview in 2017 and I quote, “There is no Expendables without Sly”, referring to Stallone as Sly. He has also said time and time again that he would never do the film without Sylvester Stallone. Arnold Schwarzenegger played the tole of Trench in the first 3 films. He has also mentioned that he has no idea of specifics regarding the movie, only that the production team wished to start filming in August 2017 like they always do. Despite the fact that Stallone has returned to the franchise, Schwarzenegger remains an outcast from the latest production. Fans thought that he would follow Stallone back and reassume his role as Trench in the new film.
Although these pieces of news have been around and heard by fans, the blow is a little brutal because the new sequel The Expendables 4 is set to be released sometime next year (2022). Fans speculate that the new movie will be released in the month of august because every other film from the franchise was released in the same month. One of the cast members Randy Couture confirmed that filming would begin in 2021 and it did. The movie is rumored to have wrapped filming in mid-October 2021. The latest Expendables is said to be the last one of the series, bringing the 11- year journey to an end. Fans are excited to see Megan Fox as the latest female lead and believe that she will bring the perfect ending to the series.

While there is a low thrum of excitement from a few fans, several others believe that this movie series should end to let in a more developed, evolved version. They believe that the protagonists are old and portray a sense of heroism that is not appreciated anymore by audiences. They also believe that the ending of this film franchise could possibly pave the way for a series of The Expendables.
Sylvester Stallone holds high everything that used to be enjoyed and appreciated in an action film but he has not evolved with age and his character is written as an invulnerable mercenary, fans today believe that this is an exact portrayal of toxic masculinity.
