A judge has dismissed Amber Heard’s plea in a $50 million defamation complaint, giving Johnny Depp victory.
A judge gave Hollywood actor Johnny Depp permission to proceed with his two-year-old defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard. The case will not be dismissed, according to a Virginia court, which also dismissed Heard’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit. Since Depp launched his lawsuit in March 2019, the ‘Aquaman’ star has filed three motions, alleging numerous reasons, including the ruling of her UK libel verdict.
The 58-year-old actor originally sued Heard for defamation in 2018 after she wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post about’surviving domestic abuse.’
In a $50 million defamation action filed in 2019, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star Johnny Depp won a huge victory over his ex-wife, Amber Heard.
Johnny Depp, star of Pirates of the Caribbean, recently made news after Amber Heard accused him of physical assault. The couple broke up and were soon embroiled in a legal dispute. Johnny Depp has just won a significant victory over his ex-wife.
Depp recently stated that he believes he is being boycotted by the Hollywood business as a result of the case. In a $50 million slander action, the actor sued Amber Heard, who is best known for her role in Aquaman. According to a report by Koimoi, Fairfax County Chief Judge Penney Azcarate denied Heard’s move for the case to be dropped, giving Depp a big victory. The lawsuit is now set to go to trial in 2022.
Depp’s defamation suit against his ex-wife has been ongoing for two years. Since 2019, Heard has made three such pleas, all of which have been dismissed. The case will now be tried in Fairfax County, Washington, next year. Both parties will resume discovery, which includes depositions.
The fight began in 2018 after Heard published an essay in the Washington Post. The actor claimed to be the public face of domestic abuse in the storey. She stated that women who speak up face the full brunt of the culture’s anger.
Following this, Depp filed a lawsuit claiming $50 million in damages. According to USA Today, he stated that Heard was attempting to obtain positive attention for herself by bringing “false” accusations against him.
Depp, on the other hand, suffered a setback after this victory. The actor previously tried but failed to sue a British magazine for calling him a “wife-beater.” Judge Andrew Nicol presided over the trial, which lasted several weeks, and concluded that the piece published in The Sun included “substantial truth.”
Depp just won another legal victory in his fight against Amber Heard.
According to a report from USA Today, the judge determined that the two lawsuits (libel and defamation) were not the same, citing the fact that Heard was not a party in the London litigation but rather a witness for The Sun, hence her motion for dismissal was unsuccessful.
Johnny made headlines recently when he claimed that the Hollywood film business was boycotting him after he lost a libel case in the United Kingdom against the British newspaper The Sun, which dubbed him a “wife-beater” in an article.
The journal had to prove that the content of its storey was “substantially true,” and the judge decided that 12 of the 14 purported domestic violence episodes had occurred.
